Cayos Cochinos is a group of small islands between Roatan & the Honduras mainland.  Because of their size and shape, we will be able to dive a variety of environments - both windward & leeward sides, vertical walls, slopes, fore reef and back reef, main reefs, sand flats - everything imaginable.  This is a marine preserve area so there are no lobster pots, no seining or other commercial fishing, and the marine life is abundant and varied.  The area is known as "Tunicate City" for the great variety and abundance of tunicates or sea squirts (at least 25 species), as well as a myriad of other marine creatures.  Trip leader, Dick Zingula (on his 63 weeks there so far) has photographed more than 400 species of plants and animals here, and finds new creatures or creature actions each trip.
We leave Houston on Saturday morning on Continental Airlines, fly to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and then take an air conditioned bus to La Ceiba where we will meet the people from Plantation Beach Resort and overnight at the Hotel Paris. This gives you time to shop for Honduras coffee, rum, etc., in the supermarket.  PBR will host us for supper Saturday night and we will leave early Sunday morning for a boat ride to the resort, arriving in time for breakfast.
From then until Friday at noon it will be DIVE, EAT, DIVE, SLEEP, & DIVE.  Three boat dives daily, with unlimited shore diving; or use a hammock or ocean kayak if you don't want all the dives.  The resort Divemaster is an expert at finding and showing you little known creatures you might otherwise miss.  We usually make 22 dives per week, with more than 22 hours underwater (per person!), and on most dives your safety stop will be spent prowling around on reefs only 10-20 ft. deep.  There is usually little or no current at Cayos, so there is no problem with sitting in one spot to take photos or video when you find something special.
Diving ends at noon on Friday, giving you time to rinse and dry gear before packing.  Kids from the local school and the local drummers usually come over on Friday afternoon to dance for us and with us.  Saturday morning we go to La Ceiba by boat, bus to San Pedro Sula, and transfer to Continental to arrive in Houston about 4:30 pm.
Trip cost includes US departure tax, round trip air fares, baggage handling & transfers, boat to and from Cayos, all accommodations (double occupancy), meals and diving, Honduras exit taxes, pre-trip meeting and post-trip party, as well as a contingency fee which is always built into HUC trips and is refunded if there are no problems - in short, about everything but your bar bill, souvenirs, and tips to resort personnel.
