The following e-mail letter was received by one our members from Dr. Sylvia Earle.  It concerns the plight of the Leatherback Sea Turtle and what you can do to help preserve this magnificant creature.

Dear Colleague,
I write to obtain your support to help save the leatherback sea turtle and protect our oceans.  In April I joined leading sea turtle and marine experts from around the Pacific to review the latest data on the Pacific leatherback sea turtle's extinction crisis.  We were deeply concerned by the urgency of the problem.  These magnificent creatures may go extinct within the next 10-15 years if we don't act now, largely because industrial fishing is an increasingly critical threat.
I urge you to help save the leatherback sea turtle by signing this Microsoft Word letter as soon as you can.  Your support is critical to our efforts to push for actions at the national and international levels.  Please respond by August 10, 2002 to ensure that your name will be included when the letter is presented to delegates at the upcoming UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa.
